Being that data science is a relatively new field, we often get questions regarding compensation for various data science-related skillsets across different locations and industries. The healthcare and medical industry, specifically, has been a major employer of data scientists, and that demand is only growing. But similar to all other industries, healthcare data scientist salaries can vary quite a bit depending on a range of factors, such as location, degree level, and years of experience in the healthcare industry.
In the chart below, we’re sharing examples of healthcare data scientist salary requests from qualified candidates we interviewed for positions over the course of the last six months. Despite being specific to the healthcare industry, we feel these salaries are broadly representative of compensation expectations across the data science domain.
It’s interesting to note that, in general, candidates with both a PhD and more than 10 years of experience in data science commanded similarly high salaries regardless of their location and level of job title. Additionally, data scientists who had more than 10 years experience but held masters-level degrees requested higher salaries than PhDs with fewer years experience. It seems a candidate’s longevity in the field of data science is a primary driver of their pay expectations.
On the other hand, the lowest salary expectations in our survey came from data scientists applying for mid-level positions in the Midwest, even if they had about a decade of experience in the field.
While this is only a small sample of data scientists, we hope that by sharing this information we can bring some clarity to the healthcare hiring managers out there who aren’t sure what they need to budget when building out their data science organizations.
