What’s Happening in AI Right Now: July 2026 Breakdown

While the AI world has been busy making headlines, we’ve been busy making a few of our own. 

Between launching a new service and working behind the scenes on an exciting AI project, June got away from us, and we unfortunately had to skip last month’s Dataspace Debrief. So this edition is a little different. We’ve rounded up some of the biggest AI stories from both May and June, all in one place, so you can quickly catch up on what you may have missed.

1. Meta is reportedly developing an AI pendant

Meta is reportedly developing an AI-powered pendant that users could wear as a necklace or clip onto their clothing, expanding its push into AI wearables beyond smart glasses. The device builds on technology from Limitless, an AI startup Meta acquired in late 2025 that created pendants capable of recording conversations, generating transcripts, and creating searchable summaries.

According to an internal memo, Meta also plans to expand its AI glasses lineup and introduce a business-focused “Wearables for Work” subscription as it looks to strengthen its AI hardware strategy and improve the performance of its Reality Labs division.

2. The internet is being rebuilt for machines

The internet is increasingly being redesigned for AI agents, not just human users. As companies like Google introduce AI systems that can research products, book travel, browse websites, and complete tasks on our behalf, cloud providers and web infrastructure companies are adapting their platforms to support this new wave of machine-generated traffic. The shift could fundamentally change how businesses build websites and digital services, making it just as important to optimize for AI agents as it is for human visitors.

3. Could AI tell you where you left your keys?

MIT researchers have developed a new AI memory system that gives robots a more human-like ability to remember where objects are over time. By combining detailed 3D maps with rich descriptions of the environment, robots can answer natural language questions like, “Where did I leave my keys?” or locate an item they encountered hours or even days earlier.

The breakthrough could make robots far more useful in homes, warehouses, and factories by allowing them to recall past interactions instead of treating every task as a new experience.

Finally, a technology that can remember where you put something… now we just need one that can remember why we walked into a room in the first place.

4. Anthropic introduces Claude Tag, bringing AI into Slack conversations

Anthropic introduced Claude Tag, a new feature that allows teams to interact with Claude directly within Slack conversations. Instead of switching between tools, employees can tag Claude to help answer questions, analyze information, summarize discussions, and assist with workplace tasks while keeping the context of the conversation. The update reflects a broader shift toward AI becoming an integrated workplace teammate rather than a standalone chatbot.

5. Trump calls off AI executive order over concern it could weaken US tech edge

President Trump postponed plans to sign a new executive order on artificial intelligence after expressing concerns that the policy could slow down U.S. innovation and weaken the country’s competitive position in AI. The proposed order would have created a voluntary framework for major AI companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google, to share advanced AI systems with the government for national security reviews before public release. The debate highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing AI safety and oversight with the desire to maintain rapid technological progress.
